Hunza - Pakistan

Hunza is probably Pakistan's most visited valley, by the tourists. It is a fairy tale land surrounded by beautiful rugged & snow capped mountains. Only at a distance of 100 Kms. from Gilgit Hunza is a small town on Karakorum Highway. At the altitude of 7000 - 800 feet it is the first main town or stop if you are entering Pakistan from China.
The central Hunza known as Karimabad is basically a town of just 6 villages. The first main villages as you come from Gilgit on the main Karakorum Highway is Aliabad. There there are spectacular views of  Rakaposhi mountain (7788 meters), PTDC Motel Hunza and other small hotels are located on the main Karakorum highway here. Just above Aliabad on the hill are Altit and Baltit villages the heart of Hunza. There is a very interesting Bazaar and two Forts in Altit & Baltit Villages. The Baltit fort has recently been restored and converted into a guided museum.
Hunza is undoubtly the Shangri-la of James Hilton's novel The Lost Horizon. It is probably the most Photogenic point in the world. There are numerous tours and activities available fromHunza Below you will find some options for bus/culture tourist where as for the adventure lovers there is more info on our Adventure Tours section.

Places in Hunza

Karimabad: As described above is the main bazaar of Hunza full of colorful shops with local dry fruits (Dried Apricots, Apricot Nut, Almonds, Walnuts Mulberry, etc.) At the end of bazaar is the Baltit village and Baltit fort which are restored by the Aga Khan fund for Culture & heritage. The fort has been brought into a guided museum you can spend time in the for visiting different sections of the fort and viewing the slide show in the small hall of the fort.
Duikar: At an height of 10000 feet above sea level this is a beautiful spot to see sunrise. You can see 8 peaks above 7000 meters from here each gets the sun light one by one as sun rises.

Hunza Valley

Hunza Valley is a stunningly beautiful and popular region in the Northern Areas of Pakistan.
Hunza, a remote mountain kingdom, may have been the inspiration behind James Hilton's "Shangri-La." The area opened up in the 1970s following the completion of theKarakoram Highway (KKH); an engineering marvel tracing the old Silk Route from Pakistan into China.
The visitors to Hunza are overwhelmed by the rugged charm, the fragrant breeze singing through graceful poplar trees and the velvet-like green carpet of wheet fields, set against the background of snow-covered mountains.
Situated at an elevation of 2,438 meters, Hunza Valley's tourist season is from May to October. The temperature in May is maximum 27°C and minimum 14°C. The October temperatures are: maximum 10°C and minimum 0°C.

Cities / Villages

Karimabad

The Capital of Hunza Valley - Karimabad is just 100 KM drive from Gilgit, and most people arrive by road and it takes almost 2 - 3 Hours to reach Hunza from Gilgit. The main bus stand is on the KKH - Karakoram Highway 'Aliabad'. There are booking agents in town for long distance buses & jeeps along the KKH. The journey from Islamabad can take as long as 24 hours.
Gilgit Airport (IATA: GIL) is small and has 45 minute flights to Islamabad on PIA
From Kashgar (China) there is a 270 RMB regular bus service to Hunza via Sost crossing over the Khunjerab Pass (about 5000 meter high). Across river Hunza at Sost, there is a village called Khuda Abad. People usually do not stop at Khunjerab Pass, they just carry on their journey to Sost with the bus. From Sost, you can do a number of activities around like trekking in the valleys, or drive to Hunza-Karimabad (2 hours), where the Baltit Fort is standing. The Khunjerab Pass is open from May 1st to Dec 30th, but closed in winter.

Ganish

Ganish is the oldest village in the heart of Hunza, Six kilometers (4 miles) beyond Aliabad, the KKH makes a sweeping S-bend down past Ganish village to the bridge across the Hunza River. Ganesh, on fertile flat and above the river, is guarded by an old watchtower and fort. The old craved mosque is also worth a visit. In the pool in front of the tower all the local children learn to swim. ( this used to be in past )Until this century boys had to swim across the Hunza River to prove that they could escape or attack across the river when necessary. Until the British came in 1891, the men of Hunza used to keep a sword, gun, shield and a loaf of bread (which was replaced every eight days) beside their doors; when the drums beat the alarm from Altit fort, heralding the approach of raiders, each man would grab these things and run for the fort. (Presumably his family went too.)Like Gilgit Hunza was an important staging post on the Silk Route and was heavily traveled for thousands of years by traders going back and forth between China, India and the west over the Kilik, Mintaka, Parpik and Khunjerab passes. The most convincing proof of this lies in the inscriptions on the Ganesh rock, a sort of Silk Route guest book.

Kongresoj

Kongresoj kunigas tutmondan esperantistaron

PROPOSAL FOR A SYMPOSIUM
Universal Esperanto Association

Languages and the United Nations

Background

The Universal Esperanto Association has a long history of organizing conferences and symposiums in cooperation with UN personnel on aspects of language. For a number of years, in the 1980s, these conferences took place in cooperation with the Office of Conference Services and included such topics as:

        Languages in International Organizations
Language and Culture in International Organizations
        The Economics of Language Use
Overcoming Language Barriers: The Human/Machine Relationship
Language Planning at the International Level
        Language Behaviour in International Organizations.

Recently the Association has revived this tradition. In December 2010, for example, it organized a symposium entitled “From Zamenhof to Soros,” at which a new biography of L. L. Zamenhof and a book by Tivadar Soros were launched. Speakers included Professor Esther Schor, of Princeton University, who is working on a book on Esperanto and Zamenhof, and the well-known financier George Soros, who presented a brief reminiscence of his father, Tivadar Soros.

A Symposium on Language and the United Nations

The Association plans to organize a symposium in the spring of 2012 (tentative date: Friday, May 4) on the topic “Language and the United Nations,” during which it hopes to consider the role of language in the operations of the United Nations and the ways in which linguistic concerns intersect with United Nations programs. Among possible topics for consideration are:

Language services at the UN: translation and interpretation
        Language training at the UN
        Indigenous languages and indigenous peoples
        Mother tongue education
        Language and development

The Association welcomes proposals for papers on any of these topics or related topics – to be presented at the spring symposium.

A preliminary meeting on the topic will take place from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Friday, December 16, at the Church Center, 777 UN Plaza, and will be followed by a brief reception. Principal speaker will be Humphrey Tonkin, University Professor of the Humanities and President Emeritus at the University of Hartford. Professor Tonkin has been associated with advocacy for the United Nations for many years and is well-known as a proponent of international education and language study. His talk will be followed by a panel discussion.

The Topic

The United Nations is a fully international organization, indeed the most extensive and comprehensive international organization in existence. Its work spans the world and the peoples and nations of the world. Built into the very purposes and mission of the United Nations is the idea of an alliance of the nations of the world in free association to improve the lot of humankind and to advance equality, democracy, and material and spiritual well-being of all nations.

The linguistic dimension affects the work of the United Nations in numerous ways but is relatively little talked about. At the most immediate level, certain languages are used for conducting the regular business of the organization. A second range of languages is used for the circulation of documents and participation in debate. A third range of languages is used for the dissemination of information to member-states and the wider public, or to deal with the particular exigencies of a given project or program within the United Nations family. Languages are not treated equally because the need for communication makes such language equality unattainable. In effect, the organization has negotiated a certain compromise between monolingualism on the one hand and total multilingualism on the other.

Implementation of United Nations language policy involves the deployment of a large body of skilled translators and interpreters, many of them regular members of the UN staff or of staffs of its agencies, and many others working under contract. The United Nations also operates its own program of language training for staff members.

Beyond the formal language policy used in the Secretariat and in the General Assembly, there exist distinct and codified language policies in the various agencies and other UN bodies. These policies are applied with varying degrees of consistency and strictness. Here, too, compromises are negotiated, in an effort to include all, though sometimes with a bias toward the linguistically more powerful – not least because such a bias exists in the larger world beyond the UN itself.

Carrying out a particular project or running a particular program may require the deployment of many languages. A development project conducted exclusively in the working languages of the UN may well exclude the very population for whom the development project is designed, or may result in top-down decision-making that does not involve the people most directly affected. Reversing that process requires careful program design in which language is given adequate attention; it also requires resources, since language specialists must be involved in the process. Nowhere is this reality clearer than in human development – addressing people’s growing demands for participation in modern society while retaining their own linguistic, cultural and religious heritage and way of life.

The field of human development includes the issue of language. UN organizations such as UNESCO have devoted particular energies to the preservation of linguistic diversity, the linguistic and cultural rights of indigenous peoples, the right to mother-tongue education, and the preservation of endangered languages and cultures. In the field of human rights, the issue of language rights, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other human rights instruments, is receiving increasing attention.

On occasion, such activities may seem at odds with official language policy within the UN – as though the formal policies of the United Nations on the one hand, and its activities in the field on the other, occupy two quite different ideological positions. Indeed, in the UN as in other organizations, there is a tendency to see language at the formal level as a technical problem, akin to plumbing or accounting, rather than as an issue that is fraught with ideological, political and cultural implications. This tendency to downplay the significance of language is itself an ideological, political and cultural choice, leading to potential distortion of the mission and accomplishments of the organization. Many feel that to upset the formal consensus might negatively affect the UN’s work in the field; others believe that greater linguistic democracy at the centre would lead to greater concern for linguistic freedom and diversity in the UN’s human development efforts. In a sense this tension reflects a larger tension in society as a whole – between those who welcome the forces of globalization as a way of opening opportunities for all and those who fear that global homogenization will lead to the loss of a sense of identity and individuality.

The Association

The Universal Esperanto Association, in addition to its promotion of the International Language Esperanto, takes an active interest in issues of language and human rights, language equality, the elimination of discrimination on linguistic grounds, multilingualism, and related issues. It is one of only a very few NGOs whose primary interest is the promotion not only of language learning but also of language rights. At the United Nations it works for these goals and also serves speakers of Esperanto (of whom there are hundreds of thousands across the world) as an information service about the UN and its work (see its website).

152nd anniversary of the birth of Ludwig Zamenhof

Polska prezydencja w Radzie UE

On 15th December 1859 Ludwig Zamenhof, the inventor of Esperanto, was born. The celebration of the 152nd anniversary of his birth includes various events, meetings and concerts organised e.g. in Warsaw and Białystok.
Dr. Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof was born in Białystok.According to biographers, it is here, in a town inhabited by representatives of many cultures, religions and languages, where the idea of a common language closing the ethnic and linguistic gaps between peopleoriginated inthe mind of Ludwigduring his childhood.
This idea did not leave him when the whole family moved to Warsaw. Here, in 1878,he celebrated the first version of the common languagewith his high school classmates. However, 9 years passed from that draft until the mature version of Esperanto saw the light of day.
LudwigZamenhof completed medical studies, but in the meantime he continued his work on his language project, which became his life’s work. The first textbook of the Common Language (LingvoInternacia) appeared on 26th July 1887. Its name originates from the pseudonym of the author, Doctor Esperanto, which simply means a hopeful person.
The textbook, entitled First Book, initially published in Russian, Polish and English, contains, in addition to grammatical rules, rules of pronunciation and a dictionary of Esperantoas well as the first translations of literary works. The translations confirm the communicative maturity of Esperanto, its literary flexibility, and how nice it sounds.
Esperanto was quickly acquiring new students and for nearly 125 years it has been the only planned language functioning in the everyday relations between hundreds of thousands people across all continents and during conferences, seminars and thematic meetings. The success of Dr. LudwigZamenhof, who was recognised as a Distinguished Citizen of the World in 1959, is proved by the language’srich original literature as well as literature translated from all languages, radio broadcasts, web portals and discussion groups and its own press.
Two UNESCO resolutions, in 1954 and 1985, confirm the role of Esperanto in thecultural achievements of humanity and recognise its great potential for communication, dialogue between people and for bringing people of all cultures and languages together.
